Mahj Play

Charleston

How Charleston works in American Mah Jongg.

Charleston is the opening pass sequence. It helps shape your hand before normal draw-and-discard play begins.

Basic Pass Flow

Players pass three tiles at a time through the table sequence. The purpose is to remove tiles that do not support your most realistic card lines.

What To Keep

Keep pairs, flowers, Jokers, and tiles that appear across several nearby target hands. Avoid breaking a promising line too early.

When To Pivot

If Charleston gives you repeated support for a different suit, wind, or dragon plan, it can be better to change direction before the wall phase starts.
